Bangkok,December 20 (AseanAll) — On December 19, 2024, an informal consultation meeting among foreign ministers from neighboring countries of Myanmar was held in Bangkok, Thailand. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, Myanmar's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Than Swe, Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Lao Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Bangladeshi Adviser for Foreign Affairs Touhid Hossain and Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri were present.
Sun Weidong said that China and Myanmar are comprehensive strategic cooperative partners and a community with a shared future. China's friendly policy toward Myanmar is for all the people of Myanmar. China does not want to see conflict or turmoil in Myanmar that would cause suffering to its people. China upholds the principle of non-interference in internal affairs, supports Myanmar in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence and national unity, and backs Myanmar's efforts to achieve domestic stability and improve people's livelihoods. China also supports dialogue and consultation among all parties in Myanmar to handle differences properly and find a development path suited to the country's conditions. China proposes that all parties should respect Myanmar's national conditions and support Myanmar's efforts to advance the peace and reconciliation process. All parties should prioritize people's livelihoods in Myanmar and increase assistance for the country's economic and social development. All parties should also support ASEAN's mediation efforts and the complementarity and reinforcement of cooperation channels with neighboring countries. All parties should oppose external interference and prevent the conflicts from escalating, prolonging and spilling over. China calls on neighboring countries to work with the Myanmar government to strengthen border management and control, jointly combat cross-border crimes, and safeguard the common interests of all countries.
The Myanmar side briefed on the current situation and the Myanmar government's efforts to maintain stability and promote reconciliation.
All participating parties agreed on the need to uphold the principle of "Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led", respect and support the Myanmar government's efforts to stop violence and maintain stability, and encourage dialogue and consultation among all parties in Myanmar and the preparation of an internal political agenda. All parties will enhance communication in a flexible manner, prevent external forces from infiltrating and interfering in Myanmar, jointly combat cross-border crimes, and form a constructive force to promote a "soft landing" of the Myanmar issue.
During the consultation meeting, Sun Weidong also held bilateral meetings with participating representatives from other countries.
