Vientiane, March 23 (AseanAll) — The first session of the 10th National Assembly of Laos opened in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, on the morning of March 23, 2026. During the session, Laos elected its new state leadership: Thongloun Sisoulith, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP), was re-elected as President of Laos; Sonexay Siphandone, member of the Political Bureau of the LPRP Central Committee, was re-elected as Prime Minister; and Xaysomphone Phomvihane, also a member of the Political Bureau of the LPRP Central Committee, was re-elected as President of the National Assembly.

According to the Lao News Agency, the opening session of the first session of the 10th National Assembly was held at the National Assembly Building in Vientiane on the morning of March 23. Lawmakers from across Laos gathered to begin deliberations on the new term's key national priorities and the appointment of leading officials.
Xaysomphone Phomvihane was unanimously re-elected as President of the 10th National Assembly. Thongloun Sisoulith secured re-election as President with 99% of the votes in favor, while Sonexay Siphandone was re-elected as Prime Minister with 98.83% of the votes.
The session also elected the Vice President, Deputy Prime Ministers, and Vice Presidents of the National Assembly.
The first session of the 10th National Assembly is scheduled to run from March 23 to 27. Lawmakers will deliberate and adopt major national agendas for the new term, including legislative plans, development strategies, and institutional frameworks.
Earlier this January, the 12th National Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party elected a new central leadership, with Thongloun re-elected as General Secretary of the LPRP Central Committee.
The National Assembly of Laos is the highest state organ of power and legislative body, responsible for formulating the constitution and laws, with a term of five years. The election for the 10th National Assembly was held this February, with a total of 175 representatives elected.
