Chinese Senior Diplomat Meets with Russian Foreign Minister

Moscow,February 22 (AseanAll)  — On February 22, 2023 local time, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC)  Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Central Committee of the CPC, met with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov in Moscow,according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China.

Wang Yi said that under the strategic guidance of the Chinese President Xi jinping and Russian President Putin, the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation in the new era continued to operate at a high level. In the face of the profoundly evolving international situation, China and Russia have always maintained strategic determination, adhered to the general direction of building a multi-polar world, advocated and practiced true multilateralism, opposed any form of unilateral and hegemonic acts, firmly safeguarded the sovereignty, security and development interests of their respective countries, actively explored the development path that is in line with their national conditions, and constantly tapped the growth potential of cooperation in various fields. No matter how the international situation changes, China is willing to maintain a good development trend of the new model of major-country relations with Russia.

Wang Yi said that this year is the first year for China to fully implement the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress. We will adhere to an independent foreign policy, promote a mutually beneficial and win-win opening strategy, and provide new opportunities for the world with China's new development. The process of Chinese path to modernization will open up new prospects and inject new connotation into cooperation with countries around the world, including Russia. China is willing to work with Russia to coordinate high-level exchanges, restart the dialogue and cooperation mechanism and promote greater development of bilateral relations.

Lavrov said that Russia attaches great importance to Russia-China relations and is willing to work with China to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and continue to consolidate and develop Russia-China strategic partnership of coordination. It is expected that the two sides will comprehensively restart exchanges in various fields and promote greater progress in practical cooperation between the two countries. Russia is willing to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China on the international stage, firmly support each other on issues involving each other's core interests, and promote the development of the international order in a more open, reasonable and just direction, which is also the historical responsibility of the two countries.

The two sides agreed to continue to strengthen cooperation within the United Nations and other international multilateral mechanisms, jointly defend the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, and resolutely oppose hegemonism and group confrontation.


The two sides also held in-depth discussions on Ukraine. Wang Yi stressed that the more complex the situation is, the more difficult it is to give up peace efforts. He hoped that all parties would overcome difficulties, continue to create conditions for dialogue and negotiation, and find effective ways of political settlement.
