Philippine President visits Singapore’s nuclear research facility

Singapore, October 10 (AseanAll)  — Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. visited the Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute (SNRSI) on October 10, 2026 to learn about Singapore’s experience and capabilities in nuclear technology.

President Marcos’s visit stems from his openness to utilizing nuclear energy amid the continuous rise in electricity prices, changing climate patterns, and the fact that many countries already use nuclear energy.

The Chief Executive’s goal is to boost supply and lower the electricity costs paid by the citizens.

Upon his arrival at the institute, the President was briefed by SNRSI CEO Low Xin Wei on Singapore’s nuclear research, which is new in Southeast Asia, especially after its establishment in 2014.

According to President Marcos, public perception of the adoption of nuclear power in the Philippines has changed in the past few years especially regarding safety issues, with more Filipinos now more receptive to such electricity source.

The President also said the Philippines has a pool of professionals ready to work in the nuclear field, unlike other countries, after the country tried to operate a nuclear power plant in the 1980s.

President Marcos noted that the Philippines is already in the first two phases of nuclear adoption preparations.

The SNRI was set up in 2014 under the Nuclear Safety Research and Education Programme (NSREP) developed with the objective of building up Singapore’s capabilities in nuclear safety, science and engineering.

As a part of the National University of Singapore, SNRSI aims to concentrate expertise and knowledge in nuclear technology and safety in a single institute, and sustain a critical mass of expertise in a range of nuclear-related activities relevant to Singapore and the region.

Accompanying the President were Finance Secretary Frederick Go, Communications Secretary Dave Gomez, Trade and Industry Secretary Ma. Cristina Aldeguer-Roque, Ayala Corp. Vice Chairman Fernando Zobel de Ayala, Ayala Corp. Chairman Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, and Aboitiz Equity Ventures President and Chief Executive Officer Sabin Aboitiz.

Also present on the Singapore side were Dr. Tan See Leng, Minister for Energy of Singapore’s Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry), Prof Tan Eng Chye, President of the National University of Singapore, and Jennie Chua, Temasek Foundation chairperson.
