India Announces Decision to Establish an Embassy in Timor-Leste

Jakarta, September 10 (AseanAll) — During the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) - India meeting on the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Summit held on September 7 in Jakarta, Indonesia, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, announced the decision to establish an Indian Embassy in the capital of Timor-Leste, Dili.

This decision is part of a 12-point plan for India's relations with the region, presented by Narendra Modi, to strengthen cooperation and diplomatic ties in the East Asian region.  This plan covers various issues, from connectivity to digital public infrastructure and actions to tackle terrorism.


In a statement published on the website of the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is mentioned that “this decision reflects the importance that India attaches to ASEAN and its relations with Timor-Leste”.  It adds that “Timor-Leste and the members of ASEAN have warmly welcomed the decision”.


Timor-Leste Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana, attended this 43rd ASEAN Summit on behalf of Timor-Leste, an observer country in the organisation moving towards full membership.
