PH, Vietnam elevate ties to Enhanced Strategic Partnership

Manila, June 1 (AseanAll)  — The Philippines and Vietnam have officially elevated their ties to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership, which is expected to usher in deeper cooperation and engagement for growth, development, innovation, and maintaining regional peace and stability.

An enhanced strategic partnership between nations is a diplomatic framework in which two countries agree to take a step higher for closer collaboration and synergy on mutual interests and advocacy, particularly in defense and security, economics, technology, and people-to-people exchanges.

“Ultimately, our exchange today has made one truth abundantly clear: this Enhanced Strategic Partnership does not merely secure our bilateral interests,” Philippine President Marcos said in a statement during a joint press conference on June 1, 2026 at Malacañang with Vietnam Communist Party General Secretary and President To Lam.

“It firmly positions the Philippines and Vietnam as steadfast anchors of peace, innovation, dynamism, and sustainable growth across ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and the wider Indo-Pacific region,” the President added.

According to President Marcos, the Vietnamese leader’s two-day state visit is a powerful testament to the longstanding friendship between the two nations.

It is further distinguished by a landmark milestone in the bilateral relations between the Philippines and Vietnam as they officially elevate ties during the 50th anniversary of the bilateral relationship and after a decade of strategic partnership.

The Philippines and Vietnam also signed various agreements during Lam’s visit, such as on defense cooperation, information technology and digital transformation, a tourism cooperation program, and an education partnership.

The President said his meeting with President To Lam also tackled economic and agricultural cooperation, as the two sides expressed determination to expand bilateral trade well beyond their mutual target of US$10 billion while actively pursuing a more balanced commercial relationship.

Regional cooperation was likewise discussed by the two leaders, as they engaged in a productive exchange on regional and multilateral affairs, and reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing a genuinely people-oriented and people-centered ASEAN.

This is to ensure that their strategic initiatives translate directly into safer, more secure, and truly prosperous societies, the President noted.

Vietnam is the Philippines’s sole Strategic Partner in Southeast Asia.
