Dili, May 15 (AseanAll) — On May 15, 2026,The President the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta joined the European Union delegation and the diplomatic community at the Residence of the EU Ambassador, Thorsten Bargfrede in Metiaut to commemorate Europe Day, marking the historic 1950 Schuman Declaration.

In his remarks, the Head of State praised the European Union as one of the most successful examples of post-war reconciliation and multilateral cooperation in modern history and emphasized that the EU serves as a vital global model, proving that peace and stability are achievable through political will, mutual respect among sovereign states, and a steadfast commitment to international law.
Reflecting on the bilateral relationship, Ramos-Horta characterized the European Union as a “constant and reliable partner” that has supported Timor-Leste’s institutional strengthening and democratic consolidation since the restoration of independence in 2002. The President highlighted that the partnership is anchored in shared fundamental values, including democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Furthermore, the President noted that the EU’s model of successful regional integration continues to inspire Timor-Leste’s own aspirations for greater connectivity and membership within ASEAN.

The President also shared a poignant personal reflection, recalling the extraordinary solidarity encountered from European citizens during the difficult years of Timor-Leste’s struggle for self-determination. The Head of the State concluded by calling for a strong, united Europe capable of engaging in constructive dialogue with global powers to prevent conflict and promote international stability.
