Timor-Leste President Reaffirms Historic Ties with Australia’s Northern Territory Ahead of Honorary Doctorate

Darwin, May 13 (AseanAll)  — Following a successful State Visit to Papua New Guinea, President of the Republic of Timor-Leste J. Ramos-Horta arrived in Darwin on May 13, 2026, receiving a warm official welcome at Government House from the Administrator of the Northern Territory, David Connolly, and Sue Brosnan OLY.

The meeting marks the beginning of the President’s official visit to the Northern Territory, undertaken at the invitation of Charles Darwin University (CDU). The gathering served to celebrate and reaffirm the enduring bonds of friendship, close geographic proximity, and deep solidarity shared between the peoples of Timor-Leste and Northern Australia.

During the courtesy call, Administrator Connolly officially congratulated President Ramos-Horta on his upcoming conferral of a Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) by Charles Darwin University, scheduled for May 14. Both leaders took the opportunity to reflect on the unique and special character of the Timor-Leste–Northern Territory relationship. They acknowledged that this strategic bond is not only defined by shared geography but is deeply rooted in human connections and the historical support the Northern Territory has provided to the Timorese people during critical moments of their contemporary history.

Looking toward the future, the two leaders reaffirmed their mutual commitment to deepening this long-standing partnership. Discussions highlighted a shared desire to expand bilateral cooperation in crucial sectors such as education, vocational training, academic exchange, and broader human development.

The President’s visit, culminating in his honorary degree recognizing his lifelong contributions to global peace, reconciliation, and diplomacy, represents a vital step in cementing the institutional and human ties that will continue to unite Timor-Leste and the Northern Territory for generations to come.
