Timorese President and UNTL’s New Leadership in Transforming Higher Education

(AseanAll)  — President of the Republic of Timor-Leste J. Ramos-Horta received the new leadership team of the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL) at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace on May 6, 2026.

Led by Rector Prof. Joviano António da Costa, the delegation formally introduced the university’s new management structure following their appointment three months ago. The meeting served as a vital institutional greeting, allowing the new administration to align their five-year development plan with the President’s vision for national progress.

During the audience, the President expressed his unwavering commitment to the university’s mission, emphasizing that the development of human resources is the backbone of Timor-Leste’s future. A significant highlight of the discussion was the President’s pledge to provide financial assistance for student scholarships and to support critical infrastructure improvements. Both parties agreed to collaborate on establishing clear mechanisms to ensure this presidential support directly benefits the student body and enhances the university’s academic capacity.

Addressing the importance of a safe learning environment, Rector Costa briefed the President on the university’s strict “zero-tolerance” policy regarding sexual harassment and professional misconduct. The Rector reaffirmed that all academic mentoring must take place within campus facilities to maintain high ethical standards. President Ramos-Horta welcomed these rigorous measures, noting that upholding integrity and protecting the dignity of students are essential for the credibility of the nation’s premier public university.
