Bangkok, May 1 (AseanAll) — Thai Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek disclosed that the Thai Government welcomes the Order of President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar on 30 April 2026, regarding the relocation of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, former State Counsellor, to a designated residence, and stands ready to foster an appropriate and gradual interaction between ASEAN and Myanmar in a bid to promote peace and reconciliation process in the country.

According to the Government Spokesperson, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow paid a visit to Myanmar on April 22, 2026 and met with Myanmar President Senior General Min Aung Hlaing to discuss relations reinforcement and border security. The meeting went well, and both parties agreed to reopen Mae Sot - Myawaddy border crossing point. The Myanmar leader also shared an update on the wellbeing of former State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, affirming that she remains in good health and that positive steps would be considered moving forward.
Gist of Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ press statement on recent developments in Myanmar is as follows:
1. Thailand welcomes Myanmar’s granting amnesty to about 1,500 prisoners, including former President U Win Myint, on occasion of the country’s traditional New Year, and supports Myanmar’s continuous effort to work together with all relevant sectors toward sustainable peace and reconciliation.
2. Thailand welcomes Myanmar’s demonstration of commitment to advancing the peace process and its invitation to all armed groups to join peace negotiations, with the aim of restoring peace and stability to the country. Thailand views this development as a positive step taken by the Myanmar Government, which is expected to build momentum toward peace and national reconciliation. Thailand stands ready to support these efforts.
Thailand also hopes to see cooperation from all relevant sectors while the peace process is underway. Myanmar reaffirmed that it will continue to work with Thailand and ASEAN in providing humanitarian assistance to people in need. And most recently, images have been circulated online showing that the former State Counsellor has been transferred from prison to a designated place of detention.
The Thai Government continues to closely monitor the situation in Myanmar, while adopting an approach of appropriate and gradual engagement. Thailand supports peace, stability, and sustainable development in Myanmar through cooperation with all parties and within the ASEAN framework, for the benefit of the Myanmar people and the region’s overall stability.
