Timor-Leste President Applauds Economic Resilience in Briefing with Timor-Leste Central Bank Governor

(AseanAll)  — On March 27, 2026, President of the Republic of Timor-Leste J. Ramos-Horta received a comprehensive briefing from the Governor of the Central Bank of Timor-Leste (BCTL), Hélder Lopes, regarding the nation’s economic and financial landscape.

The Head of State commended the BCTL and the Government for fostering a resilient economic recovery, highlighted by a projected growth rate of 4.6% for 2025. President Ramos-Horta expressed his strong appreciation for the Central Bank’s diligent oversight and encouraged the institution to continue its vital work in partnering with relevant entities to drive the nation’s economic progress forward.

During the audience, the President and the Governor discussed strategies to shield Timor-Leste from external economic shocks, particularly global fuel price fluctuations resulting from international conflicts. Governor Lopes reported that the nation’s Petroleum Fund remains highly robust, with its balance projected to reach $18.6 billion by the end of 2025. Welcoming this positive data, the President supported the Central Bank’s strategic view that rather than fearing a “fiscal cliff,” the government must prioritize high-quality spending and investments that yield strong domestic returns while securing long-term fiscal sustainability.

The meeting also addressed forward-looking financial initiatives, including the BCTL’s preliminary preparations for a potential national currency and a push toward the digitalization of payments. Furthermore, the Central Bank leadership assured the President that recent public confusion surrounding the authenticity of the 200 centavos coin has been effectively resolved.

The Head of State was pleased to note that ongoing socialization campaigns are being rolled out across all municipalities to educate citizens and local businesses, working in tandem with law enforcement to prevent counterfeiting and protect the public.
