Bangkok, May 2 (AseanAll) — The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Sugiono, together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Maris Sangiampongsa, co-chaired the 10th Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCM) meeting in Bangkok, Thailand on May 2,2025.
One of the main achievements of this meeting is the principled agreement to elevate the relationship between the two countries to the level of Strategic Partnership. "This step reflects our increasingly close bilateral relationship, as well as our shared vision to contribute more significantly to the region," said Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono.
As a follow-up, Indonesia and Thailand agreed to form a Joint Working Team to draft the Strategic Partnership Roadmap and identify priority sectors that will become concrete deliverables during the next high-level visit.
In the economic field, both countries agreed to expand market access for Indonesian products, including the agriculture, fisheries, and MSME sectors, and to encourage new cooperation in the field of green energy transition. Foreign Minister Sugiono also welcomed the interest of Thai investors to collaborate with several strategic Indonesian companies.
The issue of protecting Indonesian citizens (WNI) is also a concern. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the prevention and enforcement of human trafficking crimes, as well as the protection of citizens. "I appreciate the support of the Thai Government in repatriating Indonesian citizens who are victims of trafficking. "We must continue to strengthen collaboration to combat this transnational crime," emphasized Foreign Minister Sugiono.
In addition to bilateral issues, Sugiono and Sangiampongsa also exchanged views on various regional and global issues, including developments in Palestine and strengthening ASEAN's role in maintaining regional stability, including ensuring peace in Myanmar.
"The meeting today lays a new foundation for a stronger, broader, and more strategic relationship between Indonesia and Thailand," concluded Sugiono.Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) is a bilateral forum at the Minister of Foreign Affairs level to discuss the progress of Indonesia–Thailand cooperation in various fields. The last meeting (the 9th JCM) was held in 2018 in Indonesia. The 10th JCM meeting coincides with the celebration of 75 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Thailand (since March 7, 1950) and serves as an important platform to promote the strengthening of bilateral relations and regional as well as global collaboration.
