Bangkok, April 6 (AseanAll) — The Thai government has pledged a broad response to domestic and international challenges following an earthquake in Myanmar and a 36 percent tariff hike by the United States on Thai exports. In a recent national address, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra outlined ongoing recovery efforts while presenting the country’s economic strategy to address global trade pressures.
Paetongtarn described the earthquake as a national tragedy that caused widespread loss of life, destruction of property, and deep emotional distress. She reaffirmed that emergency assistance, recovery operations, and compensation measures are being implemented through coordinated action across all sectors. Plans are also underway to strengthen the country’s long-term disaster preparedness.
The prime minister addressed concerns over new US tariffs, which are expected to impact key export sectors such as electronics, processed foods, and agriculture. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira will lead a Thai delegation to Washington next week for high-level consultations with US agencies and private sector stakeholders. The goal is to present Thailand as a dependable economic partner and to seek constructive solutions.
Thailand has prepared proposals that include increasing imports from the United States in strategic areas such as energy, agriculture, and aerospace, while also pledging to prevent illegal transshipment activities. Efforts are also underway to diversify export markets and accelerate trade negotiations with partners in the Middle East, Europe, and India, including pursuing new and updated free trade agreements.
With a national strategy meeting set for April 8 to finalize a coordinated policy response, the prime minister voiced confidence that Thailand can navigate current challenges through unity and well-planned action.
