Thai Govt to work with private sector to identify policies and measures in response to US trade policy

(AseanAll)  — On March 13, 2025, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking to discuss policy planning and responses against President Trump’s plan to address US trade deficit through increasing import tariffs which would have impact on Thailand.

Thai Deputy Government Spokesperson Sasikarn Watthanachan disclosed gist of the meeting as follows:

The Prime Minister had a broad discussion with representatives of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Thai Industries, and the Thai Bankers' Association to emphasize the Government’s commitment in coping with the matter. A working group has been set up to address and respond to US trade policy that may impact the Thai economy. Relevant agencies have also closely followed up on the situation in order to adjust plan and implementation in a timely manner in line with the changing context.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence in the private sector’s capability to support the Government in this regard. The Government strives to work together with the private sector to seek proper measures to mitigate possible economic impact, and may leverage the potentials of Thailand's agricultural product to cope with the current economic situation.

Participating in the meeting from the Thai Government’s side were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Pichai Chunhavajira; Chief Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister Pansak Vinyarat; Chair of the Thai Trade Representatives Nalinee Taveesin; Minister of Commerce Pichai Naripthaphan; Secretary-General to the Prime Minister Prommin Lertsuridej; Permanent Secretary to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Secretary to Ministry of Commerce, Permanent Secretary to Ministry of Industry; Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Council; and representatives of relevant Government agencies. Representatives of the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) who attended the meeting were its chair Kriangkrai Thiennukul who is also chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries; Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trade of Thailand Sanan Angubolkul; Chairman of the Thai Bankers' Association Payong Srivanich; JSCCIB Director General Sutee Satanasathaporn; and relevant private sector agencies.
