Timor-Leste President Receives ‘Maputo Key’ Award From Mozambique’s Capital

(AseanAll)  — Timor-Leste President J. Ramos-Horta has been honored with the prestigious “Maputo Key” award by the Municipal Council of Maputo, Mozambique’s capital city.

The award recognizes Ramos-Horta’s significant political and academic achievements, as well as his status as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

In a ceremony held at the Municipal Assembly on 5 July 2024, the President of the Municipal Council of Maputo, Razaque Manhique, personally presented the “Maputo Key” to Timor-Leste President Ramos-Horta. The award was bestowed following a resolution passed by the Assembly, acknowledging his lifetime of service and accomplishments.

Ramos-Horta, currently serving his second term as President of East Timor (having previously held the office from 2007 to 2012), is widely respected for his diplomatic skills and tireless work in conflict resolution. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996 for his efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in East Timor.

The “Maputo Key” award further strengthens the bonds between Mozambique and East Timor, two Portuguese-speaking nations with a shared history of struggle for independence and subsequent nation-building efforts. Upon receiving the award, Ramos-Horta expressed his gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to fostering peace and cooperation between nations.
