Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Meets with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister

New York,May 28 (AseanAll)  — On May 27, 2026 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn in New York.

Wang Yi thanked Prak Sokhonn for attending the Security Council high-level meeting, where Cambodia made its voice heard, showed its image, and raised its influence on this important platform. Facing a chaotic international situation, all participants called for upholding the U.N. Charter, practicing multilateralism, giving the U.N. its proper role, and rejecting unilateral bullying. China-Cambodia relations are maintaining strong momentum. The first meeting of China-Cambodia “2+2” strategic dialogue mechanism between foreign and defense ministers was held successfully. Both sides agreed to upgrade it to a “3+3” mechanism on diplomacy, national defense and public security. This reflects the high level of mutual trust between the two countries, and points to new and greater development ahead. China is ready to deepen comprehensive strategic cooperation with Cambodia, maintain close high-level exchanges, advance practical cooperation in trade, energy, law enforcement and connectivity, strengthen multilateral coordination, and build an all-weather China-Cambodia community with a shared future in the new era.

Prak Sokhonn said he was honored to attend the high-level meeting at China’s invitation. Under the current circumstances, upholding the U.N. Charter is essential for world peace, security and sustainable development. China’s initiatives have shown a leading role in global governance. Cambodia upholds the one-China principle, supports China’s national reunification, and opposes any form of “Taiwan independence”. This position is firm and will not change. Both countries agreed that upgrading the “2+2” mechanism to a “3+3” mechanism will further expand the breadth and depth of cooperation. Cambodia stands ready to work with China, guided by the strategic consensus between the leaders of two countries, to maintain close high-level exchanges, speed up development strategy alignment, and achieve more results in building a Cambodia-China community with a shared future.

The two sides also exchanged views on the Cambodia-Thailand conflict. Wang Yi said that Cambodia-Thailand dialogue and consultation have produced positive results. As a common friend of both Cambodia and Thailand, China supports both sides in staying on the path of dialogue, and stands ready to continue playing a positive role in helping them build mutual trust and improve relations. Prak Sokhonn presented Cambodia’s position, thanked China for its constructive efforts, and expressed willingness to reduce differences through dialogue with Thailand and gradually normalize bilateral relations, and looked forward to China’s continued support.
