Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Holds Talks with Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian

Beijing,May 25 (AseanAll)  — On May 25, 2026, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan in Beijing.

Wang Yi stated that over the past year, guided by the strategic vision of the leaders of both countries and through the joint efforts of both sides, the China-Singapore all-round high-quality future-oriented partnership has maintained strong momentum. The Chinese Premier and Singaporean Prime Minister exchanged visits last year, and both countries jointly celebrated the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties, with cooperation across various fields reaching new heights. Though different in size, China and Singapore are both stabilizing forces in the world. In the face of a turbulent and complex international landscape, both countries remain steadfast in upholding multilateralism, championing free trade, and advocating for an international system with the United Nations at its core. The two countries should continue to strengthen strategic communication, enhance mutual trust, jointly address the myriad global challenges emerging one after another, and safeguard regional peace and stability.

Wang Yi stated that China attaches great importance to the development of bilateral relations with Singapore. China stands ready to always leverage the dynamic nature of the China-Singapore partnership, maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges, promote practical cooperation across various fields, strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and play a pioneering and exemplary role in the region. Safeguarding the security of global industrial and supply chains and ensuring unimpeded maritime navigation are the common aspirations of all countries and serve the shared interests of the international community. China is willing to continue making efforts toward these goals. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the ASEAN-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Singapore is an important member of ASEAN and will assume the chairmanship of ASEAN next year. China looks forward to Singapore continuing to play an active role in promoting China-ASEAN cooperation.

Vivian Balakrishnan stated that despite the numerous instabilities and uncertainties facing the world today, Singapore and China have always maintained a high level of mutual trust and close cooperation, keeping the bilateral relations vibrant. Singapore highly cherishes its relationship with China, and in the current complex international landscape, the exchanges and cooperation between the two sides are of paramount importance. Singapore adheres to the one-China policy and firmly opposes “Taiwan independence”. This is a long-standing and consistent policy that will never change. Singapore will not do anything that goes against or undermines China’s interests. Singapore highly commends China’s development and revitalization achieved through reform and opening-up, as well as its contributions to safeguarding global supply chains and free trade. The Singaporean side believes that China possesses even greater potential for future development. Singapore stands ready to work closely with China to maintain high-level exchanges and promote pragmatic cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, education, science and technology, talent training, and people-to-people exchanges. Both sides should aim to build key bilateral projects into success stories and enhance regional connectivity.

Vivian Balakrishnan stressed that keeping the Strait of Malacca continuously open serves the interests of all parties, and Singapore supports the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Malacca and other international waterways. Singapore is ready to promote greater progress in the ASEAN-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and supports the Global Development Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping. Singapore stands for multilateralism and free trade, and is willing to work with China to uphold the WTO-centered multilateral trading system, making joint efforts to promote world peace, development, and prosperity.

The two sides also had an in-depth exchange of views on international and regional issues of mutual concern.
