Timor-Leste President and Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Forge Historic Strategic Partnership

Port Moresby, May 11 (AseanAll)  — President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta held a landmark bilateral meeting with Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape at Melanesian Haus on May 11, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the relationship between Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea.

Both leaders celebrated their shared history of resilience and Melanesian heritage, pledging to transform their “ancient respect for the ocean” into a robust strategic partnership. The President emphasized that this first-ever State Visit serves to bridge the two nations as “Big Ocean States” dedicated to regional stability and mutual growth.

A key outcome of the talks was the mutual commitment to establish permanent embassies in Dili and Port Moresby, a move designed to facilitate direct trade and strengthen people-to-people ties.

The leaders also agreed to amplify the “Pacific Voice” on the global stage through coordinated diplomacy at the United Nations. This cooperation includes a strategic agreement regarding the upcoming UN Security Council vote for Portugal, reflecting Timor-Leste’s unique role as a bridge between the CPLP and the Pacific.

As they prepare for the Melanesian Oceans Summit, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the “Blue Economy,” ensuring that ocean protection pledges translate into sustainable livelihoods for future generations.
