Chinese Foreign Minister Meets with President of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

Beijing, April 29 (AseanAll)  — On April 29, 2026, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with President of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly Annalena Baerbock in Beijing.

Wang Yi stated that the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is the core platform for practicing multilateralism and advancing global governance. Assuming the presidency of the UNGA on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations is a glorious mission and a great responsibility. He expressed the hope and belief that Annalena Baerbock will unite all members, uphold sovereign equality, defend international rule of law, promote dialogue and consultation, and consolidate the foundation of multilateralism. China stands ready to continue supporting her in performing her duties.

Wang Yi pointed out that it is high time to support, revitalize and strengthen the United Nations. Today, the world is experiencing escalating turmoil and intensified hotspot issues. Individual countries pursue the supremacy of power and openly challenge the status and role of the United Nations, putting the organization and multilateralism under severe strain. Faced with headwinds and countercurrents, we must adhere to the right path of unity and cooperation, and not allow the law of the jungle to prevail. In the face of hegemonism and bullying, we must uphold justice and fairness, and not let those with stronger fists have the final say. China always keeps the overall situation in mind and takes a long-term perspective, earnestly fulfills its important responsibility of safeguarding world peace and security, and resolutely defends the purposes and principles of the UN Charter,  making China’s contributions that stand the test of history and time.

Wang Yi noted that President Xi Jinping, responding to the widespread aspirations of the international community, has promptly put forward the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), sending a clear signal of upholding multilateralism, reforming and improving the global governance system, and strengthening the role of the United Nations. This year marks the 55th anniversary of China’s restoration of its legitimate seat in the United Nations. China will firmly safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core, drive common development of all countries through China’s development, and empower global governance with China’s sound governance.

Wang Yi emphasized that UNGA Resolution 2758 resolved once and for all the issue of the representation of the whole of China, including Taiwan, in the United Nations. This resolution has been universally observed by the UN system, which China commends. China opposes any words or actions that challenge the authoritativeness of this resolution.

Annalena Baerbock thanked China for its long-term and firm support for the work of the United Nations and the UNGA. She stated that as a founding member of the United Nations and a permanent member of the Security Council, China plays an important leading role in upholding multilateralism, safeguarding international law, and advancing the three pillars of peace, development and human rights. At present, multilateralism is under increasing pressure, and the UN Charter has come under direct attack. Countries need to unite and support the United Nations more than ever before. President Xi Jinping once said that history is the best textbook. The 80-year journey of the United Nations has shown that in the face of emerging global challenges, no country, including major powers, can tackle them alone. Only through joint efforts can all parties address them and make common progress.

She expressed the expectation to take the implementation of the “UN80 Initiative” as an opportunity to continue strengthening cooperation with China, promote the improvement of global governance, and jointly advance the cause of world peace and development. The current session of the UNGA will continue to abide by Resolution 2758.
