Dili, March 24 (AseanAll) — On March 24, 2026, President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta has returned to Timor-Leste following a highly productive private working visit to Jakarta, where the president engaged in key diplomatic and developmental discussions.

During his trip, the Head of State met with former Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri to reaffirm the enduring bilateral ties and shared history of reconciliation between the two nations. Additionally, the President explored innovative eco-tourism models, meeting with investor Tomy Winata to discuss privately funded strategies for developing Timor-Leste’s expansive Nino Konis Santana National Park, drawing inspiration from Indonesia’s successful Tambling Wildlife Nature Conservation (TWNC) project.
Upon his arrival in Dili, Ramos-Horta also addressed pressing domestic matters, expressing support for the Government’s decision to reclaim land from the stalled Pelican Paradise resort project. The president emphasized the urgent need to reallocate the site to capable investors to ensure the construction of a 5-star hotel and convention center ahead of the 2029 ASEAN Summit. Furthermore, touching upon national security, the President advocated for progressive leadership within the National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL), voicing his strong preference for appointing a female General Commander to highlight the proven dedication and capability of women in state institutions.

Looking toward the future, the President briefly addressed speculation regarding his potential re-election bid, underscoring that institutional stability remains his utmost priority. The Head of State reaffirmed his unwavering trust in and loyalty to Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, stating that any future Head of State must guarantee harmonious cooperation with the current Government.
