Timor-Leste President Returns From Davos: Defending Human Rights and Promoting Economic Partnerships

(AseanAll)  — The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta, arrived in Dili on January 25, 2026 following a productive working visit to the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 in Davos, Switzerland.

Upon his arrival, the President emphasized the unique nature of the forum, noting that unlike the United Nations, the WEF provides a strategic platform for direct engagement with the private sector and global economic leaders. During his mission, the President met with major international investors who expressed a strong interest in visiting Timor-Leste to study the country’s emerging economic and investment opportunities.

Addressing recent criticism from the Myanmar government regarding “interference” in internal affairs, the President remained firm in Timor-Leste’s diplomatic position. The President clarified that the criminal complaint filed with the Public Prosecutor’s Office originated from an international legal organization, rather than a local one, and followed standard legal procedures.

Furthermore, he participated in high-level, closed-door discussions on the Myanmar humanitarian crisis alongside UN Special Envoy Julie Bishop and other global figures. The President stated categorically that Timor-Leste’s membership in ASEAN does not require the nation to remain “deaf and dumb” regarding the human rights violations that are already central to both the ASEAN and UN agendas.

The President’s visit successfully highlighted Timor-Leste’s proactive role in both global diplomacy and economic integration. By advocating for Rohingya refugees and the restoration of democratic norms in the region while simultaneously attracting high-level investment, the Head of State reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to a foreign policy rooted in moral clarity and sustainable development. These engagements in Davos serve to strengthen the nation’s international standing and pave the way for future strategic partnerships that benefit the Timorese people.
