Indonesia and Vietnam Agree on Defense and Security Cooperation

(AseanAll)  — Indonesia and Vietnam agreed to enhance cooperation in the fields of defense and security, including the development of the defense industry, joint military exercises, and joint patrols. 

This agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting between the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, and the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), Tô Lâm, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on March 10,2025.

"In the field of defense and security, we agreed to enhance cooperation first in the defense industry, as well as in joint exercises, cooperation between us." Exchange of officers, enhancement in training, and we even agreed to conduct joint patrols," said Prabowo.

Cooperation in the defense sector is an important part of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and Vietnam. In addition, both countries also reaffirm their support for the stability and peace of the ASEAN region as the main foundation for economic growth and the welfare of the people.

In addition to defense cooperation, Indonesia and Vietnam also agreed to strengthen collaboration in other fields, ranging from the fisheries industry to cooperation between the central banks of both countries. As part of strengthening bilateral relations, Prabowo conveyed his plan to Vietnam to make a reciprocal visit.

At the end of the visit, the President of the Republic of Indonesia specifically escorted the departure of the Secretary-General of CPV along with Mrs. Ngo Phu’o’ng Ly to Singapore from the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base on March 11.

The visit of Secretary-General Tô Lâm and his delegation to Indonesia coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Vietnam. While in Jakarta, the CPV Secretary-General also held meetings with the Speaker of the MPR, the Speaker of the DPR, and the Speaker of the DPD at the Nusantara Building, Senayan.

This visit is an important momentum in strengthening the strategic cooperation between the two countries. The close relationship between Indonesia and Vietnam, which continues to grow, reflects the increasingly strong spirit of partnership between the two countries.
