Timor-Leste and Viettel Forge Ahead on Telecom Expansion at 2025 ASEAN Future Forum

(AseanAll)  — The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta met with Viettel Group CEO Nguyen Thi Hoa (Hana) on February 25, 2025 at Hanoi’s Melia Hotel to advance collaboration on expanding telecommunications infrastructure in Timor-Leste, particularly through Viettel’s subsidiary Telemor.

The meeting, attended by Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Bendito dos Santos Freitas, occurred during the 2nd ASEAN Future Forum (February 25–26), underscoring regional partnerships for technological progress. Ramos-Horta emphasized telecommunications as a strategic pillar for economic growth and modernization, praising Telemor’s role in improving digital connectivity and inclusion since its 2012 launch.

During the talks, CEO Nguyen announced Viettel’s commitment to upgrade Timor-Leste’s network from 4G to 5G, promising enhanced quality and opportunities for economic, educational, and social sectors. Ramos-Horta reaffirmed government’s dedication to fostering foreign investment and innovation, calling Viettel a “fundamental partner” in democratizing access to telecom services. The CEO highlighted Telemor’s 12-year legacy in Timor-Leste, aligning with Viettel Global’s footprint across 11 countries, and pledged continued investment in digital infrastructure.

The Timor-Leste delegation, including Ambassador João Pereira, underscored the meeting’s significance in strengthening bilateral ties. Telemor, licensed in Timor-Leste since August 2012, has driven telecom modernization, with the 5G rollout marking a new phase in bridging the nation’s digital divide and supporting ASEAN’s collective vision for a tech-driven future.
