(AseanAll) — Timor-Leste President and Nobel Peace Laureate, J. Ramos-Horta officially received the Letters of Credence from Thorsten Bargfrede, the new Ambassador of the European Union to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, in a ceremony held at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace on September 15, 2025.
The diplomatic relations between Timor-Leste and the European Union, established on 20 May 2002, are deeply rooted in a long-standing partnership based on shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The EU was the first development partner to support Timor-Leste, championing the principles of “Country Own, Country Lead and Use Country System.” Current cooperation focuses on economic diversification and growth, good governance, green and sustainable development, social inclusion, and regional integration, notably through support for Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN and the WTO.
The new Ambassador, Mr. Thorsten Bargfrede, is a seasoned diplomat with a distinguished career in the European External Action Service. He brings extensive experience from key postings in Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Kenya, Pakistan, and Brussels, with a focus on political affairs, strategic planning, and development cooperation.
Ramos-Horta expressed his confidence that the Ambassador’s extensive diplomatic experience would significantly contribute to deepening the bilateral ties. President stated, “The European Union has been a steadfast partner from the first moments of our nation’s rebirth. Our partnership, rooted in mutual respect and shared values, continues to empower our institutions and our people. The EU’s support is critical as we strive for economic resilience, regional integration, and a sustainable future for all Timorese. We look forward to working closely with Ambassador Bargfrede to further strengthen this vital alliance.”
Ramos-Horta acknowledged the wide range of ongoing projects supported by Team Europe and wished Ambassador Bargfrede a successful and productive tenure in Timor-Leste.
