The woman's body was found wrapped in red cloth in a pond in a small town in Kandal province near Phnom Penh on on June 6, according to Cambodian newspaper Rasmei Kampuchea Daily. Local villagers discovered her body and alerted the police.
The Cambodian police soon identified the victim as a Korean woman with over 250,000 followers on social media. She had announced her retirement from her live streaming career last year.
The victim was identified as a BJ, short for "broadcast jockey," a term used in Korea to refer to a person that films themselves talking, eating, or playing games on live broadcasting websites such as YouTube, Twitch or Afreeca TV, who had been traveling in Cambodia.
The Cambodian authorities arrested the Chinese couple in their 30s who own a clinic as the suspects in her murder.
The Chinese suspects ran a medical clinic. They allegedly testified to police that they abandoned the woman's body after she had seizures and died while receiving treatment at their clinic on June 4.
The police suspect the couple to have disposed of the victim's body to avoid punishment.
The cause of her death remained undetermined as of June 11. The Cambodian police are still waiting for the autopsy report.
According to South Korean media,the Korean police said they have requested that the Cambodian police do a thorough investigation of the case.
While the identity of the live streamer has been officially withheld, social media users are speculating the victim as BJ Ah Young, who was a popular streamer on AfreecaTV, one of South Korea's biggest live streaming service platforms, prior to her retirement last year.
