(AseanAll) — On September 4, 2025, the President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta, met with Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão for their regular constitutional meeting to receive a detailed update on the Government’s significant progress towards Timor-Leste’s full membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The Prime Minister reported that the Council of Ministers has approved 14 legal instruments and essential agreements for accession, which are now being prepared for submission to the National Parliament for urgent ratification. These steps reflect a coordinated and determined effort by the Executive to fulfill a national strategic objective.
The meeting also addressed other critical areas of the national agenda. Prime Minister Gusmão updated the President on his upcoming official trip to London to address legal matters related to Timor-Leste’s maritime boundary negotiations. Additionally, he provided information on the preparations for the official visit of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, a key ASEAN partner, which will further strengthen bilateral ties and regional cooperation. These updates underscore the government’s active engagement on both domestic priorities and the international stage.
Ramos-Horta acknowledged the Government’s diligent work and reaffirmed his full support for the measures being taken to conclude the ASEAN accession process. He stressed that Timor-Leste’s integration into the regional bloc is a top national priority, capable of opening new opportunities for economic development, strengthening diplomatic relations, and ensuring long-term stability and prosperity.
