Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar makes his first official visit to the ASEAN Secretariat

Jakarta, July 29 (AseanAll)  — Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made his first official visit to the  ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat on July 29, 2025.

Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, warmly welcomed Anwar Ibrahim, ASEAN Chair for 2025 and the Prime Minister of Malaysia, on the occasion of his official visit to the ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat.

The official visit started with a tree planting ceremony, to be followed by signing of the guestbook, presentation of an artwork, as well as other high-level engagements.  

The engagements included an Interface between the Prime Minister and the Secretary-General of ASEAN, the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR), and the Ambassador of Timor-Leste to ASEAN, as well as the delivery of a Policy Speech.   

During his official visit to the ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat,  Anwar Ibrahim, ASEAN Chair in 2025 and Prime Minister of Malaysia, presented a Malaysian artwork to Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn.  This gesture symbolised Malaysia’s commitment to cultural exchange and collaboration within the ASEAN Community and marked a significant moment in fostering deeper ties between Malaysia and ASEAN.  The artwork will serve as a lasting reminder of this important official visit and the shared values of unity and cooperation among the ASEAN Member States.

Kao Kim Hourn, together with the Committee of the Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR) and the Ambassador of Timor-Leste to ASEAN, held an Interface with Anwar Ibrahim, ASEAN Chair for 2025 and Prime Minister of Malaysia, at the ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat.

The Interface underscored Malaysia’s steadfast leadership and enduring commitment to strengthening ASEAN Community-building and regional cooperation, particularly during its ASEAN Chairmanship this year.  Dr. Kao extended his sincere congratulations to Malaysia under the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, on the successful hosting of the 46th ASEAN Summit and related Summits in May, particularly with the adoption of the ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future, followed by many important meetings, including the recently-concluded 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Related Meetings in early July.  These milestones reflect Malaysia’s instrumental role in advancing ASEAN’s shared vision for peace, resilience, and prosperity in the region.

Anwar Ibrahim delivered a Policy Speech at the ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat, highlighting Malaysia’s leadership and Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025.

Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, delivered opening remarks prior to the Policy Speech, commending The Honourable Anwar Ibrahim’s distinguished leadership and Malaysia’s pivotal contributions to ASEAN Community-building efforts. Secretary-General Dr. Kao emphasised the value of high-level policy addresses by ASEAN Leaders in shaping the regional discourse and in deepening engagement with the diplomatic corps, ASEAN entities, the business community as well as with the media, paving the way for expanding ASEAN narratives in the region and beyond.

The Policy Speech was attended by members of the diplomatic corps in Jakarta, representatives of ASEAN-associated entities, academia and think tanks, business leaders, and staff members of the ASEAN Secretariat.
