Indonesian President Prabowo and Singaporean PM Wong’s Inaugural Leaders’ Retreat Marks a New Chapter in the Indonesia–Singapore Strategic Partnership

Singapore, June 17 (AseanAll)  — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in Singapore on the evening of June 15,2025 for a state visit. The President was directly welcomed by Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at Paya Lebar Air Base.

Prabowo's visit agenda includes a bilateral Leaders’ Retreat meeting with Singapore PM Lawrence Wong and a meeting with Singapore's President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, held on June 16,2025 at the Parliament House, Singapore.


"It is a great honor for me to make my first state visit to Singapore." Singapore is a close friend and a strategic partner of Indonesia. We have a long history of mutually beneficial cooperation, and I am confident that this partnership will continue to grow towards a stronger and more complementary direction," said Prabowo in his bilateral meeting.

Singaporean President Tharman also expressed appreciation for President Prabowo's visit, stating that President Prabowo's visit is an important moment to discuss a new phase in the bilateral relations between Indonesia and Singapore. He mentioned that the cooperation between the two countries has now entered a new level and is on a very promising path.


This state visit was also marked by the naming ceremony of the orchid "Paraphalante Dora Sigar Soemitro," in honor of the late mother of President Prabowo. This naming reflects personal closeness and diplomatic values in Singapore's tradition.

Tharman welcomed the positive trend of increased Singaporean investment in Indonesia, including strategic projects in renewable energy and low-carbon industrial zones. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening regional stability and inclusive and sustainable regional cooperation.

Prabowo Subianto held the annual Leaders’ Retreat bilateral meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the Parliament House, Singapore on June 16,2025. This meeting is part of President Prabowo's first state visit since his inauguration in October 2024, marking a new milestone in the strategic relations between the two countries.


Preceded by a tête-à-tête meeting, the two leaders discussed various regional and bilateral strategic issues in a one-on-one setting. Lawrence Wong warmly welcomed President Prabowo's visit and referred to this year's Leaders’ Retreat as the beginning of a new partnership between the two leaders who have known each other for a long time.

"I spent my childhood in Singapore. We have a long and close relationship with Singapore," said the President.  Prabowo expressed appreciation for the warm welcome and described the Indonesia-Singapore relationship as personal, historical, and strategic.

"This year's Leaders' Retreat is the first for both of us in our current capacities, and I look forward to working with you, Mr. President, to chart a new path for our bilateral relations," said Lawrence Wong .

In a joint press conference, Prabowo emphasized that the Leaders’ Retreat was very productive, resulting in 19 strategic agreements in various sectors: politics, economy, defense, law, food, energy, human resources, education, and health. The President also specifically expressed his honor at the naming of a new orchid after his mother.


The meeting resulted in important agreements in various sectors, including:

▪Defense, law, and airspace: The implementation of expanded framework agreements continues to be strengthened, including the management of FIR which is now running effectively.

▪Green economy: Three MoUs were signed related to cross-border electricity trade, carbon storage, and sustainable industrial zones.

▪Finance: Extension of the bilateral financial arrangement between MAS and Bank Indonesia for the next three years.

▪Food security: The new MoU includes agricultural technology and the Young Farmers Development Programme.

▪Connectivity and youth: New flight routes to Padang and Kertajati have been opened, and cross-border internship programs have been expanded.


Five main memorandums of understanding were signed in the presence of both leaders, namely:

1. Joint Report of Six Bilateral Economic Cooperation Working Groups
2. MOU on Food Security and Agricultural Technology
3. MOU on Sustainable Industrial Zones
4. MOU on Cross-Border Electricity Trade
5. MOU on Carbon Capture and Storage


In addition, several other agreements were also announced, including:

▪Implementation of FIR and Extradition;

▪Defense Cooperation Update;

▪Reciprocal Recognition of Halal Certification;

▪BI-Singapore Monetary Financial Cooperation;

▪Marine Human Resources Training;

▪Prosecutor's Office Cooperation;

▪Library Management;

▪Funding and Development of Renewable Energy (Ciputra–SMG, Sembcorp–IKN);

▪Youth and Young Farmers Exchange;

▪Scoot flights to Kertajati and Padang.

This agreement reflects a comprehensive and adaptive cooperative approach to regional challenges, ranging from food security, green energy transition, to strengthening connectivity and human resource capacity.

Prabowo highlighted concerns over the situation in Gaza and the Israel-Iran tensions, emphasizing the importance of a ceasefire and diplomatic solutions. Both leaders agreed on the importance of Indonesia and Singapore's active roles in maintaining regional stability and supporting peaceful resolutions to global conflicts.

"We call for an immediate ceasefire and respect for international humanitarian law, in order to prevent more civilian casualties in Gaza and the situation in the Middle East," emphasized Prabowo.

Regarding Myanmar, both leaders called for constructive engagement to create peaceful and stable conditions. PM Wong emphasized Singapore's commitment to strengthening ASEAN and the rules-based international system.

Prabowo also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the investment management agencies of both countries, Temasek and Danantara, to support the development of renewable energy and low-carbon industrial zones. The President expressed his desire to make Singapore a key strategic partner in Indonesia's green economic transformation.

The President also encourages the improvement of air connectivity and the development of airport infrastructure to support community mobility and tourism cooperation.

Both leaders also attended the launch of the renewable energy cooperation project as a milestone in green collaboration between countries. PM Wong emphasized Singapore's support for Indonesia's aspiration to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Closing the Leaders’ Retreat, Prabowo invited Lawrence Wong and the Singapore delegation to attend the next meeting in Indonesia. “I am very confident that this bilateral relationship will continue to grow stronger. Until we meet again at next year's Leaders’ Retreat in Indonesia,” said the President.

This visit is part of President Prabowo's active diplomacy efforts to strengthen Indonesia's position as a key regional partner amid the continuously evolving global dynamics.
