PH President thanks the Filipino-Chinese community for the Binondo revival

Manila, June 7 (AseanAll)  — Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on June 7, 2025 expressed his gratitude to the Filipino-Chinese community for their vital role in preserving and restoring the rich historical and cultural heritage of Binondo, Manila, breathing new life into the storied district that bridges generations and traditions, according to the Presidential Communications Office of the Philippines.

Leading the ceremonial lighting of the iconic Jones Bridge in Binondo, the President gave tribute to members of the community in the world’s oldest Chinatown.

“So, I thank the vibrant community of Binondo. From the families, the merchants, the students, the elders—all of those who have kept this place alive and vibrant, and an important part of our continuing cultural evolution. You have done much more for our heritage, more than you can ever know. Maraming salamat po,” said Marcos.

During the ceremonial lighting of the iconic Jones Bridge in Manila on the night of June 7, Marcos was accompanied by First Lady Marie Louise “Liza” Araneta-Marcos and several other government and business executives.

The President also thanked the government’s private partners, such as the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII), and the government agencies involved in the Pasig: Bigyang Buhay Muli (BBM) campaign to rehabilitate the Pasig Riverbanks system.

“Let us see this project through with the same vigor and dedication that we have shown to bring it this far. Let us finish Phase II, as we transform Ongpin and Escolta into cultural and economic hubs. We will bring back their golden years so that we can relive them,” the President said.

Starting June 7, Jones Bridge, which spans the Pasig River and connects Binondo to central Manila, will feature a display of lights and sounds for public enjoyment.
