(AseanAll) — From April 29th to May 1st, 2025, Mr. Leung Chun-ying, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of GX Foundation, visited Timor-Leste and had a meeting with President of Timor-Leste Dr. José Ramos-Horta, Vice Prime Minister Mr. Francisco Kalbuadi Lay and Minister of Health Ms. Elia A. A. dos Reis Amaral.
The two sides reviewed the progress and outcomes of dengue fever prevention efforts, and exchanged views on public health governance, the promotion of clean portable drinking water, and the development of friendly cooperation between China and Timor-Leste. Chinese Ambassador Ms. Wang Wenli accompanied Mr.Leung to participate in activities.
During the meeting, Leung Chun-ying spoke highly of the growth of China–Timor-Leste relations. He summarized the progress of the GX Foundation’s “Dengue Prevention and Control Project” launched in Timor-Leste since November 2023 and briefed on the advancement of the Clean Water Project. He noted that the Foundation had donated over 100 nano-filtration water purifiers to hospitals, schools, and other public institutions across the Timor-Leste, significantly improving access to safe and clean drinking water for the local population. He further stated that the Foundation would continue supporting dengue fever prevention by providing additional protective supplies—including mosquito lamps, nets, and test kits—to help strengthen disease control capacity and interrupt transmission pathways. These ongoing initiatives, he emphasized, are deepening bilateral cooperation in public health and enabling more Timorese people to benefit from the health-related achievements Under the Belt and Road Initiative.
José Ramos-Horta and Francisco Kalbuadi Lay warmly welcomed Mr. Leung’s visit to Timor-Leste, expressed appreciation for China’s longstanding support, thanked GX Foundation for its contributions to dengue prevention, clean water supply, and public health improvement, and wished that both sides would continue to enhance cooperation for the benefit of the two peoples. Minsiter Ms. Elia introduced the current situation and needs in the medical and health sector in Timor-Leste.
During the visit, Leung Chun-ying also attended the Handover Ceremony of Clean Water purifier between the GX Foundation and the Timor-Leste Ministry of Health, met with Dr. Arvind Mathur, the WHO Representative in Timor-Leste, held in-depth discussions with representatives of Chinese enterprises and overseas Chinese in Timor-Leste, and visited local universities, where he engaged with students participating in Foundation’s internship program.
