Jakarta,November 1 (AseanAll) — On November 1, 2024, ASEAN welcomed San Lwin as the new Deputy Secretary-General (DSG) of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC).
In accordance with the ASEAN Charter, DSG Lwin will support the Secretary-General of ASEAN in the implementation of the ASCC Blueprint 2025 and will lead the ASCC Department of the ASEAN Secretariat. He will oversee the implementation of projects under ASCC that focus on forging a common identity and building a caring and sharing society within the region. DSG Lwin, a national of Myanmar, will serve a three-year term from 2024 to 2027,succeeding DSG Ekkaphab Phanthavong from the Lao PDR (2021-2024).
With over 41 years of experience, DSG Lwin has held various significant positions. His last appointment was as Ambassador of Myanmar in Austria, Ambassador of Myanmar Accredited to Holy See and Lithuania. Other than serving at bilateral Embassies, DSG San Lwin had also served as Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations Office in Vienna and Deputy Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations Office in New York.
DSG Lwin holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Science from the Rangoon Arts and Science University.
Guided by the ASEAN Charter, the Secretary-General of ASEAN is assisted by four Deputy Secretaries-General, each representing different nationalities from the Secretary-General and comes from four different ASEAN Member States.
Two DSGs are nominated by Member States on a rotational basis for a non-renewable term of three years while the other two DSGs are openly recruited based on merit for a three-year term which may be renewed for an additional three years. DSG Lwin is one of the two nominated DSGs.
