Timor-Leste President Honors Dewi Fortuna Anwar and Lead Regional Security Discussion

Dili,May 18 (AseanAll)  —Timor-Leste President and Nobel Peace Laureate, J. Ramos-Horta bestowed the Honorific Order of Timor-Leste in the Collar category upon Professor Dewi Fortuna Anwar during the Presidential Lecture Series II held at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace on May 16th, 2024.

Renowned Indonesian scholar and political figure, Professor Dewi Fortuna Anwar, currently serves as a Research Professor at the Research Centre for Politics-National Research and Innovation Agency (PRP-BRIN), Chairman of the Board of Directors at The Habibie Center, and an Academician at the Social Science Commission-Indonesia Academy of Sciences (AIPI). Anwar co-founded the Foreign Policy Committee of Indonesia and has held advisory roles for several international organizations, including the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters.

Dewi Fortuna Anwar was a closer Advisor to Indonesian President Habibie in 1999 when he agreed to a referendum in East Timor, in which 78.50% voted for independence from Indonesia.

After the award Ceremony, Ramos-Horta hosted the 2024 Presidential Lecture-Series II with the topic “Regional Security and Diplomacy in Southeast Asia, Challenges and Opportunities.

This lecture aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the significant challenges and opportunities currently faced by Southeast Asia in terms of security and diplomacy. By fostering a deeper understanding of these dynamics, with a specific focus on their impact on Indonesia and Timor-Leste, the lecture aspires to contribute to informed discussions and collaborative solutions for a more stable and prosperous region.

Dewi Fortuna Anwar delivered the lecture, drawing on her vast experiences in academia, government, and activism to analyse the current security landscape and diplomatic efforts within the region. Her expertise lies in Indonesia’s foreign policy, democratization, ASEAN, and regional political and security issues. This lecture paid particular attention to how these dynamics impact both Indonesia and Timor-Leste.

The Presidential Lecture-Series II on “Regional Security and Diplomacy in Southeast Asia, Challenges and Opportunities” was attended by a broader audience in Timor-Leste interested in Southeast Asian Affairs.
