Tokyo,January 29, 2023(AseanAll)-A new hazardous waste final disposal facility built by a Japanese company has been completed in Indonesia.
According to NHK,on January 27, officials from Indonesia and Japan attended a ceremony to open the site in Lamongan Regency on Java Island.
The facility occupies about 30 hectares of land. It processes hazardous waste into fuel and other materials and buries unrecyclable waste in landfills after treating it to reduce its harm to the environment.
Indonesia previously had only one final disposal site for hazardous waste, including heavy metal and waste oil, according to the report,
This put a burden on businesses to transport waste to another island. The lack of disposal sites also caused concerns about illegal dumping.
The facility took more than a decade to build because it was hard to acquire an area that was big enough.
Officials at Indonesia's Ministry of Environment and Forestry say they expect investments in the field of hazardous waste treatment to increase from Japan. They also say they hope to learn Japanese waste disposal technologies.
Tachikawa Takanobu is the managing director of Dowa Eco System Indonesia, which built the facility. He says Indonesia is likely to continue its economic growth and his company hopes to help build a better environment for manufacturers.
