South Korea says it has agreed with the United States that many of the allegedly leaked US documents are fake and untrue. The documents include those that suggest Washington spied on Seoul.
South Korea's presidential office on Tuesday(April 11) said the US and South Korean defense chiefs agreed on the assessment in a phone conversation. It also said the two sides will further strengthen their relationship of trust and cooperation through their alliance.
The documents in question purportedly give details of internal discussions among South Korean officials about US pressure to provide artillery shells to Ukraine. The conversation was allegedly obtained through US eavesdropping.
The papers are among the classified US documents on the Russian invasion of Ukraine that are reportedly circulating on social media. The New York Times first reported the alleged leak last week, citing senior US officials.
South Korea's Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Kim Tae-hyo said on Tuesday that the issue is something the US should investigate on its own.
Kim spoke to reporters before heading for the US. He indicated he will not discuss the topic during his visit to Washington.(NHK)
