Bangkok, August 6 (AseanAll) — On August 6, 2026, at theThai Government House, Thai Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul had a plenary meeting with Min Aung Hlaing, President of Republic of the Union of Myanmar on occasion of the latter’s official visit to Thailand. Both sides came to terms to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in all dimensions, while advancing collaboration in security, economy, trade, investment, energy, development, and cross-border issues for mutual benefit of the people of both countries.
The Prime Minister congratulated the President of Myanmar on assuming the position, and noted that the President’s visit to Thailand, which is among his first destinations, reflects close friendship and strong ties between the two countries. These friendship and relations lie with good neighborliness, mutual trust, and the bonds between the people. Thailand stands ready to support Myanmar’s participation in ASEAN and to continue working together toward sustainable growth for both countries.
The two leaders agreed to maintain positive momentum in bilateral relations through continuous dialogue and regular high-level exchanges, while pushing the implementation of the Joint Statement into concrete outcomes. They also committed to strengthening cooperation between the legislatures of both countries.
On politics and security cooperation, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability along the Thailand–Myanmar border. He proposed elevating cooperation in security and in the prevention and suppression of transnational crime, particularly narcotics, online scam, and money laundering, as well as enhancing collaboration among relevant agencies of both countries to improve safety for their people and the border areas.
With regard to economic cooperation, the Prime Minister emphasized that economic partnership is one of the pillars of Thailand–Myanmar relations. He was pleased with the reopening of the Second Thailand–Myanmar Friendship Bridge (Mae Sot–Myawaddy) border checkpoint, and proposed that both sides accelerate reduction ofregulatory barriers, border trade facilitation, and transport connectivitydevelopment to revitalize border trade and economic activity. Thailand also expressed readiness to host the Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting within this year, and proposed further cooperation in energy, private sector investment promotion, development of bilateral payment mechanisms, and advancement of economic corridors and infrastructure linking Thailand, Myanmar, and the wider region. This is to elevate trade and investment and promote shared growth in a sustainable manner.
On labor cooperation, the Prime Minister expressed pleasure with the signing of the Thailand–Myanmar labor agreement, and emphasized important contribution of Myanmar workers to the Thai economy. He reaffirmed the Thai Government’s commitment to protecting workers’ rights and welfare, while promoting legal employment through close collaboration between the two countries.
With regard to environmental cooperation, there is a need for shared responsibility to drive tangible cooperation as environmental challenges directly affect the health and wellbeing of people of the two countries. Both sides agreed to accelerate implementation of the joint action plans to address cross-border haze pollution, establish a joint technical working group to tackle river pollution, and continue collaboration on water resource management and flood prevention, all of these aiming at improving environmental quality and the quality of life of the border communities.
Thailand also reaffirmed its readiness to be a long-term development partner for Myanmar through cooperation in agriculture, public health, education, human resource development, small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as the application of space technology and geoinformatics to support development, disaster management, and tackling of environmental issues.
At the end of the meeting, the Prime Minister noted that this meetingsymbolized Thailand and Myanmar’s commitment to elevating cooperation in all dimensions for tangible benefits of the people of both countries, and reaffirmed that Thailand will continue to be a supportive friend and partner to Myanmar based on friendship and shared interests.
Following the meeting, the Prime Minister and the Myanmar President witnessed the exchange of 3 documents:
1. Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand on Labor Cooperation, and the Agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar on the Employment of Workers
2. Terms of Reference (TOR) of the Joint Working Group on Water Quality Management in Border Rivers and Transboundary Rivers between Thailand and Myanmar
3. Memorandum of Understanding between Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) and Myanmar Space Agency on cooperation in the peaceful application of Earth observation technology.
According to the Government Spokesperson, the outcome documentsdemonstrate that Thailand–Myanmar relations are not confined to Government-to-Government relations, but the collaborations that are aimed at solving problems and delivering tangible benefits to the people of both nations. This includes labor management between the two countries, addressing environmental and transboundary water pollution issues, and applying space technology and geoinformatics for development. These also reflect shared commitment of both leaders to deepen Thailand–Myanmar cooperation in all dimensions.
