Dili, April 2 (AseanAll)  — Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão met with President of the Republic of Timor-Leste J. Ramos-Horta on April 2, 2026 to discuss the urgent implications of the Middle East conflict on Timor-Leste’s energy security. 

The Prime Minister announced that the Government has authorized the emergency import of 80 million liters of fuel to sustain the national power grid (EDTL) and security forces for the next six months and warned that if global supply chains remain disrupted, the Government may implement strategic power conservation measures, including nighttime electricity restrictions and limitations on the use of state vehicles.

The Prime Minister also briefed the President on his upcoming diplomatic mission to Singapore in late May to continue maritime boundary negotiations with Australia and Indonesia. Additionally, the President officially approved several Decree-Laws, including the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement with USAID and a revised Life Pension law. Regarding the latter, the President emphasized the need for a mechanism that prioritizes support for former office holders facing genuine financial hardship, ensuring the law serves a social justice function.

In the spirit of the Lenten season, Prime Minister Gusmão and the President appealed for national unity and social harmony. The Prime Minister condemned recent acts of youth violence and called for a peaceful Easter focused on reflection rather than conflict. 

The meeting concluded with the approval of a plan to repatriate the remains of beloved former Bishops to a new memorial garden at the Dili Cathedral, a move intended to honor the historical and spiritual leaders who guided the nation through its most difficult eras.
