(AseanAll)  — On February 26, 2026, President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta was received by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris, France for an official visit, marking the second meeting between the two leaders in two years. 

The encounter served to reaffirm the excellent bilateral relations and deepen the political dialogue at a crucial moment for Timor-Leste’s international standing. Macron reiterated France’s support for Timor-Leste’s economic development and its integration into ASEAN, a move both leaders agree will further strengthen their partnership based on shared democratic values and multilateralism.

During the meeting, the leaders highlighted significant progress in economic and diplomatic cooperation, including the ongoing process to open a French Embassy in Dili. Ramos-Horta emphasized the importance of French investment in strategic sectors, such as the Tibar Bay Port and the Manatuto Solar Panel Project, a joint venture between EDF and the Itoshi Group. The Timorese President also expressed his desire to expand cooperation in environmental protection, specifically through permaculture projects, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

The discussion also covered pressing global issues, with both Heads of State exchanging views on the Indo-Pacific, the South China Sea, and the crises in Ukraine, Myanmar, and the Middle East. They reaffirmed their commitment to international law and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. 

This visit to Paris is a key component of President Ramos-Horta’s broader European tour, which also included an address to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, showcasing Timor-Leste’s dedication to global peace and human rights.
