Timor-Leste President Briefed on Strategic Investment Plans in the Agriculture, Aviation, and Finance Sectors

Dili, January 16 (AseanAll)  — The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta, received a delegation of international investors from China, Hong Kong, and Singapore on January 16, 2026 at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace for a briefing on strategic investment plans aimed at supporting Timor-Leste’s economic development.

The delegation, led by Michael Ong, briefed the Head of State on the contacts and meetings recently held with Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, as well as with several relevant ministries, regarding the preparation and implementation of initiatives with a high economic and social impact.

In the field of agriculture, proposals were presented for the introduction of “Juncao” technology, an innovative and sustainable farming method focused on the production of livestock feed and other essential products. The project includes an initial three-month pilot phase before its gradual expansion. As part of national capacity building, the investors expressed readiness to grant scholarships for Timorese students to train in China and to establish a permanent training base in Timor-Leste in the future, aiming to strengthen the skills of local farmers and the private sector.

The meeting also addressed significant proposals in aviation and finance, including a plan to introduce two Airbus A320 aircraft to enhance national connectivity, either through a partnership with Aero Dili or by obtaining a new Air Operator Certificate (AOC).

Additionally, following consultations with the Central Bank, the delegation presented plans for a microfinance framework intended to provide better access to credit for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

President Ramos-Horta expressed great satisfaction with the progress made and welcomed the potential of these investments to create jobs and modernize the country’s infrastructure.
