Indonesian Foreign Minister: Cambodia-Thailand Will Find a Peaceful Way Forward

Kuala Lumpur, December 22 (AseanAll)  — Indonesian Minister for Foreign Affairs Sugiono attended the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the Situation between Cambodia and Thailand in Kuala Lumpur on December 22, 2025. The Meeting was convened to discuss the recent Cambodia–Thailand border situation, which has become a shared concern following the escalation on 8 December 2025.

The Meeting was chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, in its capacity as ASEAN Chair, and was attended by all ASEAN Foreign Ministers, with the exception of Myanmar, which was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a non-political capacity, and Viet Nam, which was represented at the Senior Official level.

During the Meeting, Indonesia expressed its appreciation for Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair and called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from further military actions, and return immediately to dialogue and diplomacy, in accordance with the ASEAN Charter and the spirit of ASEAN unity.

The loss of life, injuries, and the displacement of civilians on both sides of the border constitute a serious humanitarian concern that requires urgent attention.

Sugiono also conveyed Indonesia’s readiness to play a constructive role, including through the contribution of personnel to the ASEAN Observer Team, to help monitor developments on the ground in accordance with ASEAN’s mandate.

In addition, Indonesia emphasized the importance of strengthening ASEAN’s capacity for conflict prevention and peaceful dispute settlement, including through the effective utilization of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) and other ASEAN mechanisms.

The Meeting adopted a Chair’s Statement reaffirming ASEAN’s commitment to unity and ASEAN centrality. The Statement also calls on the parties concerned to restore trust and return to dialogue, both through bilateral mechanisms and with the facilitation of the ASEAN Chair.

“Indonesia believes that our two ASEAN family members, Cambodia and Thailand, will find a peaceful way forward through dialogue with the full support of ASEAN,” Minister Sugiono emphasized.

On the margins of the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Sugiono also held a bilateral meeting with the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Kao Kim Hourn.
