Thai new PM Anutin denies having any personal relations with Cambodian leaders

(AseanAll)  — On September 30, 2025, at the Parliament, Thai new Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul attended the First Annual Ordinary Session of the National Assembly (special), chaired by House Speaker Wanmuhamadnoor Matha, to deliver the Government’s policy statement in accordance with Section 162 of the Constitution. The Prime Minister denied having any personal relationship with the Cambodian leaders, and stated that he officially met Samdech Hun Sen for the first time during his trip to accompany Thai former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on the visit to Cambodia in April 2025.

According to the Thai Prime Minister, there was no hidden agreement nor use of personal relations to take up the premiership. He was notified, upon the return from the visit to Cambodia, of his removal from the position of Minister of Interior, with a proposal to instead assume the role of Minister of Public Health. With his trust and support given to former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the Prime Minister personally believes that such proposal was made out of political pressure, not the former Prime Minister’s true desire. Coupling with the leak of phone conversation between the former Prime Minister and the Cambodian leader, Bhumjaithai Party decided to withdraw from the Coalition, as it viewed the Government as lacking legitimacy and engaging in actions detrimental to the nation. Bhumjaithai Party later announced its alliance with the People's Party and agreed on the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to establish a minority Government that will lead to dissolution of the House by January 31, 2026. The Prime Minister emphasized that his Government came through the diplomatic channel with 313 votes in support from the House of Representatives.

The Thai Prime Minister added that allegations against him, be it, involvement in the Senate collusion case, and political pressure in the Khao Kradong case, are now being scrutinized and investigated by the Election Commission. At the moment, he is simply an accused, not an alleged offender, and the Prime Minister expressed willingness to be punished if the court rules that he is guilty.

The Thai Prime Minister affirmed that during his tenure as Minister of Interior, he strictly complied with the law, and never exerted his power to help any wrongdoer. He also vowed not to exert his power as a Prime Minister to benefit any individual. Finally, the Prime Minister reaffirmed that that the House of Representatives will definitely be dissolved by January 31, 2026, as stipulated in the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).
