Indonesia–Germany Consolidate Partnership: From CEPA to the State Visit of the President of Indonesia

Jakarta, August 20 (AseanAll)  —The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Sugiono, received a visit from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Johann Wadephul, in Jakarta on August 20,2025.

This visit is the first trip to Asia by German Foreign Minister Wadephul since taking office in May 2025. Indonesia's selection as one of the first destinations reflects the close partnership between the two countries.

During the meeting, the two Ministers discussed strengthening cooperation in various fields of mutual priority. Foreign Minister Sugiono also expressed appreciation for the invitation from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to make a state visit to Berlin in the second half of 2025.

The Indonesian Foreign Minister shared experiences regarding President Prabowo's priority programs, particularly in poverty and hunger eradication. Both Ministers agreed to accelerate the implementation of the Indonesia-EU CEPA to expand trade and investment. The Indonesian Foreign Minister also invited Germany to collaborate through Danantara in investing in priority sectors such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence, infrastructure, and food security.

In the field of labour, both countries welcomed the deployment of Indonesian healthcare workers to Germany and encouraged the expansion of cooperation into the hospitality sector. Germany offered support for language training programs for prospective Indonesian workers.

On the energy issue, Indonesia appreciates Germany's role as co-lead of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and agrees to strengthen collaboration in clean energy transition, including involving the private sector in green investment.

In the food security sector, Indonesia invites Germany to support the Free Nutritious Meals Program through sustainable agricultural cooperation, animal husbandry, and solar-powered cold storage technology.

Both Ministers also emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people contact, including through facilitating visas for students, tourists, diplomats, and holders of official passports.

In discussions regarding regional and global issues, including the situation in Palestine, Indonesia emphasized the need for global unity to end the humanitarian crisis in Palestine and welcomed the steps taken by several major countries that have recognized Palestine.

Wadephul expressed his view that Indonesia, as the world's third-largest democracy with rapid growth, is becoming stronger and plays an important role on the international stage. This makes Indonesia a key partner for Germany and the European Union.

Since establishing diplomatic relations on June 25, 1952, Germany has been one of Indonesia's main partners in Europe. This meeting serves as an important foundation for preparing the Indonesian President's state visit to Germany and for strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries in various fields.
