Dili, July 22 (AseanAll) — The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta, was officially briefed on July 21, 2025 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, on the final steps for the full accession of Timor-Leste to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
During the meeting, the Minister informed that the solemn accession ceremony is scheduled for October 26th in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, representing the culmination of a long and demanding political and diplomatic journey that began more than a decade ago.
Bendito Freitas highlighted that the ASEAN nations have pledged “maximum support” for Timor-Leste’s integration post-accession, with countries like Singapore already preparing dedicated support programs to enhance human resources and institutional strengthening. This support, according to the Minister, reflects the member states’ confidence in Timor-Leste’s positive contribution as the 11th member of ASEAN.
Ramos-Horta stated that he will consult with the Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, to finalize the composition of Timor-Leste’s delegation that will participate in the accession ceremony, stressing the importance of a representative presence at the highest level.
The national focus now shifts to ensuring that Timor-Leste participates as a competent and active member, contributing positively to the region. The successful conclusion of the accession process is a testament to the nation’s persistence and its commitment to maintaining a strong and respected image in regional and international politics.
