Timor-Leste President and Prime Minister Discuss Government Priorities and Budget Review

Dili, July 8 (AseanAll)  — The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta, met with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão to discuss the main priorities of the Government, as part of their regular meeting at the Presidential Palace on July 8, 2025.

The Prime Minister confirmed that a comprehensive review of the State Budget is scheduled for August, with the aim of ensuring fiscal responsibility and the effectiveness of public spending. This review is aligned with ongoing discussions on the performance evaluation of government members, aimed at strengthening efficiency and accountability.

During the meeting, the President was also briefed on the development of a National Action Plan for the Blue Economy, which will be submitted to a broad public consultation to ensure its effective implementation.

The agenda also included an analysis of Timor-Leste’s recent diplomatic engagements. The Prime Minister reported on the positive outcomes of the Conference of Luso-Asian Communities, highlighting the event’s role in strengthening cultural identity and promoting peace through friendship. Future international commitments were also discussed: the Prime Minister detailed his upcoming official visit to Singapore, while President Ramos-Horta is scheduled to attend the CPLP Summit in Guinea-Bissau – which reinforces the dynamism of Timorese foreign policy.

Both leaders acknowledged the persistent challenges to democratic institutions and the rule of law. Despite this, the Prime Minister conveyed a message of resilience, reiterating the Government’s commitment to overcoming obstacles, while reaffirming national peace and stability as indispensable foundations for the country’s development and progress.
