Jakarta, June 26 (AseanAll) — ASEAN and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) at the 19th Meeting of the ASEAN-Japan Joint Cooperation Committee (AJJCC), held on June 26, 2025 in Jakarta at the ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat.
The Meeting noted the substantive progress made in implementing the Joint Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation: Trusted Partners and its Implementation Plan adopted at the Commemorative Summit for the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation in December 2023 in Tokyo. Cooperation between ASEAN and Japan has been strengthened across the three pillars of the CSP, namely Heart-to-Heart Partners Across Generations; Partners for Co-creation of Economy and Society of the Future; and Partners for Peace and Stability.
The Meeting discussed ways to further enhance ASEAN-Japan collaboration with a view to advancing substantive, meaningful, and mutually beneficial cooperation under the CSP, aligned with the ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future. Both sides highlighted the need to continue implementing all action lines of the Implementation Plan. Emphasis was placed on key areas such as trade and investment; digitalisation; cybersecurity; innovation; clean and renewable energy including support for the ASEAN Power Grid; sustainable development; disaster management; climate change; smart cities; connectivity; and people-to-people exchanges.
ASEAN welcomed Japan’s commitment to supporting the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) through concrete projects and activities aimed at fostering practical cooperation in the AOIP’s key areas. The Meeting welcomed Japan’s proposal for a Joint Statement on the further promotion and implementation of the AOIP, as a follow-up to the ASEAN-Japan Joint Statement on cooperation on the AOIP adopted in 2020, and looked forward to working closely to finalise the Statement as the outcome document of the 28th ASEAN-Japan Summit in October this year.
The Meeting was co-chaired by the Permanent Representative of Singapore to ASEAN, Ambassador Gerard Ho, and Ambassador of Japan to ASEAN Kiya Masahiko, and attended by Permanent Representatives of ASEAN Member States and representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat. Timor-Leste attended as Observer.
