Thai PM Backs Universal Health at WHO Assembly

Bangkok, May 21 (AseanAll) — Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra reaffirmed Thailand’s support for universal health coverage and resilient public health systems in a video address to the 78th World Health Assembly.

The Premier underscored the role of health as a foundation for national development and global progress, connecting it to the mission of achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Thailand has had advanced universal health coverage since 2002 and continues to strengthen its healthcare system through policy integration and digital innovation. Current efforts include the use of digital tools to enhance service delivery, emergency response, and preparedness for health crises and climate-related disasters. Mental health has also been incorporated into national strategies to support long-term recovery and resilience.

The Prime Minister highlighted local efforts to improve public health, noting that several Thai municipalities, including Bangkok, Sadao in Songkhla, Ban Suan in Chonburi, and Khlong Cha-un in Surat Thani, are part of the World Health Organization’s Healthy Cities Network. These local governments have adopted participatory models to raise health standards at the community level.

Paetongtarn also expressed Thailand’s support for the World Health Organization’s reform agenda. She called for continued global cooperation to build equitable, sustainable health systems in line with the country’s efforts to keep pace with international health goals and strengthen cross-border partnerships.
