Bangkok, May 13 (AseanAll) — Thai Government Spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub disclosed that on May 8, 2025, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra had a phone conversation with Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, regarding the current violence in the Southern border provinces and development progress of the border area.
Paetongtarn was pleased to have a talk with the Malaysian counterpart once again, following the latter’s visit to Thailand in April. She reaffirmed the importance of Thailand-Malaysia border development, and agreed to co-witness the opening of the route connecting the new Sadao border crossing point and Bukit Kanu Hitam of which the construction is expected to complete at the end of this year. Both the Prime Ministers also agreed to hold a mini joint cabinet retreat on the occasion to drive forward cooperation between the two countries.
Paetongtarn expressed concern over the recent violence in the Southern border provinces which cost the lives of the innocents. The Malaysian Prime Minister affirmed his country’s commitment to work closely together with Thailand to end the violence that hinder the development of the border area.
The Thai Prime Minister expressed support over Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship, and emphasized the importance for ASEAN to work closely together in addressing global trade challenges. Member states should also cooperate under the ASEAN framework in providing humanitarian assistance and bringing peace to Myanmar.
At the end, the two Prime Ministers expressed pleasure to meet again at the upcoming 46th ASEAN Summit at the end of the month.
