On 29 April 2025, the Malaysian Foreign Minister delivered Malaysia’s National Intervention at the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs Meeting, under the theme “The Role of Global South in Reinforcing Multilateralism”. Malaysia advocated for the strengthening of the principles of multilateralism and called on the Global South to forge a new path in reshaping international cooperation and becoming a key actor in global realignment, in the wake of the recent unilateral tariffs by the United States.

As Chair of ASEAN for 2025, Malaysia also called for deeper engagement between ASEAN and BRICS, aimed at fostering regional economic cooperation, and reinforcing collective efforts toward a fairer and more sustainable global economy. Malaysia highlighted the need to strengthen intra-regional trade, develop resilient supply chains and embrace emerging industries with sustainability and innovation at its core.

Malaysia also called on BRICS to stand united in charting a renewed and inclusive path toward a just global order. In this context, Malaysia reiterated its steadfast support for the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination and the establishment of a sovereign State of Palestine based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. Malaysia also welcomed and supported Brazil’s BRICS Chairmanship priorities in the areas of climate change; health cooperation; green technology and innovation; digital economy and artificial intelligence.

Earlier, on 28 April 2025, the Malaysian Foreign Minister attended the BRICS Brazilian Experience Reception, hosted by the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, to welcome the BRICS Members and Partner Countries.

In the course of his visit, the Malaysian Foreign Minister also met with counterparts from Brazil, Bolivia, Cuba, Nigeria, Iran, Thailand, Russia, South Africa and Uganda, to exchange views on issues of mutual interest.
