Ramos-Horta of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste met with Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the UK House of Commons, at the British Parliament in Westminster. The meeting marked a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations, with both leaders highlighting the recent establishment of Timor-Leste’s Embassy in London as a milestone in diplomatic ties.
During the discussions, Ramos-Horta expressed gratitude for the UK’s reception of the Timorese community and acknowledged the respect they receive in British society. The Head of State also emphasized Timor-Leste’s commitment to democratic principles, highlighting our country’s peaceful power transitions and political stability. The Speaker, in turn, recognized the shared values of democracy, freedom, and tolerance between the two nations.
Ramos-Horta announced that Timor-Leste is finalizing its ASEAN membership process, expecting full entry later this year. He also discussed the UK’s potential role in promoting peace globally, particularly in conflict mediation efforts such as in Ukraine.
Additionally, the Timorese leader mentioned his intention to represent Timor-Leste at Pope Francisco’s funeral, underscoring the country’s deep Catholic faith and spiritual ties with the Vatican.
