Beijing, April 21 (AseanAll) — On April 21, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defense Minister Dong Jun co-chaired the First Ministerial Meeting of China-Indonesia Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.
Wang Yi said, China and Indonesia are friendly neighbors facing each other across the sea and close friends with a shared future. President Xi Jinping and President Prabowo Subianto met twice in the past year to jointly outline a blueprint for the development of China-Indonesia relations in the new era and lead the building of a community with a shared future between the two countries to a new level. Under the personal guidance of the two heads of state, China and Indonesia have set up and launched the China-Indonesia Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue mechanism. This is the first foreign and defense ministerial dialogue mechanism established by China globally, which fully demonstrates the high degree of strategic mutual trust between the two countries and further enriches the connotation of a China-Indonesia community with a shared future with regional and global influence. Noting that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Indonesia, Wang Yi said that it is particularly timely for the two sides to hold the 1st Ministerial Meeting of China-Indonesia Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue. China is ready to work with Indonesia to ensure the success of this meeting and make the China-Indonesia Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue mechanism the primary platform for enhancing political, security and defense cooperation between the two countries, so as to continuously bring bilateral friendship, mutual trust and strategic cooperation to a higher level.
Wang Yi said, the two sides should take the important common understandings reached between the two heads of state as the strategic guidance, firmly stay focused on the central task of building a China-Indonesia community with a shared future, and push for a new chapter in bilateral relations at a high level and from a high starting point. Both sides should jointly uphold strategic autonomy, support each other's core interests, maintain close high-level exchanges, strengthen dialogue in various fields, enhance law enforcement and security cooperation, and build solid strategic mutual trust. The two sides should seek greater synergy in their comprehensive development, advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, set more benchmarks for cooperation in emerging sectors, foster new quality productive forces, leverage complementary advantages in resources and production capacity, build secure and stable cross-border industrial and supply chains, and jointly resist external interference. Both sides should strengthen the foundation of friendship between the two peoples, continuously expand bilateral people-to-people exchanges, and organize a variety of celebration events marking the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Wang Yi said that the world is undergoing transformations unseen in a century. Facing the severe impact of unilateralism and hegemonism, human society has once again come to a crossroads. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, and the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Conference. China is ready to further carry out high-level strategic cooperation with Indonesia, jointly promote the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the Bandung Spirit, strengthen communication and coordination on platforms such as the United Nations, BRICS, and the G20, amplify the regional and global influence of the China-Indonesia community with a shared future, and work together as a force for justice in maintaining world peace and stability, a progressive force in safeguarding international fairness and justice, and a constructive force in promoting global development cooperation, so as to provide more positive energy for a world fraught with changes and instability.
Dong Jun said that in recent years, under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, China and Indonesia have continuously deepened and substantiated defense relations, setting a model for military cooperation between China and ASEAN countries, and effectively safeguarding regional security and stability. At present, the international situation is characterized by changes and chaos, and the region is facing multiple challenges. The deepening of defense and security cooperation between China and Indonesia will surely provide strong support for the building of a China-Indonesia community with a shared future with regional and global influence, and contribute to safeguarding peace and stability in the region and the world at large. China is ready to work with Indonesia to implement the common understandings reached by the two heads of state and strive to build a new pattern of defense and security cooperation characterized by deeper strategic mutual trust, better institutional frameworks, more robust coordination, and a stronger foundation in addressing challenges. The two sides will engage in multi-faceted, in-depth practical cooperation, elevate bilateral relations to a new and higher level, and jointly deal with risks and challenges.
Sugiono said that the 1st Ministerial Meeting of China-Indonesia Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue is an important milestone in bilateral relations, which demonstrates the all-round, high-level and strategic nature of Indonesia's relations with China. In the current international situation characterized by turbulence and full challenges, peace, stability, openness and cooperation are even more important. Indonesia firmly pursues the one-China policy, believes that the Taiwan question and issues related to Xinjiang and Hong Kong are China's internal affairs, and opposes any external interference. Indonesia is willing to work with China, under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, to use celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as an opportunity to further strengthen political mutual trust, enhance exchanges at all levels, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, agriculture and fisheries, energy, healthcare and digital economy, and strengthen communication and coordination within ASEAN-China and other multilateral frameworks to achieve common prosperity.
Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said that at present, the military relations between Indonesia and China are developing with a sound momentum. Indonesia is willing to strengthen strategic dialogue with China, deepen strategic mutual trust, uphold the principles of respecting each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, continuously tap into the potential, enhance cooperation in fields such as defense and maritime security, safeguard regional peace and stability, jointly address global challenges, and promote the continued in-depth development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
The two sides also had in-depth communication on the situation in the Middle East and other international and regional issues of common interest and concern, and reached broad common understandings.
After the meeting, Wang Yi and Sugiono jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia on Establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue Mechanism.
