Bali, June 12 (AseanAll) — The Director General of Information and Public Diplomacy (DG IDP) of Indonesia, together with the Vice President of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) Turkiye, Rahman Nurdun, co-chaired the Emerging Development Partners (EDP) meeting in Bali, Indonesia on June 11,2024.
The meeting was attended by 38 participants from 9 emerging donor countries, including Indonesia, and 3 international organizations.
The initiation of this meeting by Indonesia marks the first gathering among emerging donor countries, spurred by the increasing trend of active involvement of developing countries in international development cooperation over the past two decades, aimed at strengthening the position of Global South countries. DG IDP, Ambassador Siti Nugraha Mauludiah, emphasized that "the initiative to establish a forum for emerging donor countries is crucial to address common challenges and strengthen the position of emerging donors in more impactful international fora." She further emphasized that "the EDP meeting underscores the importance of collaboration among developing countries to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs)." Similar sentiments were echoed by Turkiye as the Co-Chair.
Prof. Bambang Brodjonegoro, former Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas (2016-2018) and Professor at FEB UI, as the keynote speaker, highlighted that the economic growth of emerging donor countries currently influences the global development agenda. Therefore, emerging donor countries need to collaborate, especially in achieving SDGs, with a priority focus on issues such as poverty alleviation, inequality, and climate change.
Subsequent discussions in Sessions I and II on Repositioning EDP's Roles in Multilateral Fora, and Exploring Innovative Joint Initiatives among EDPs, began with presentations from Dr. Carlos M. Correa, Executive Director for the South Centre; and Mr. Adnan H. Aliani, Director of Strategy and Programme Management Division of UNESCAP, as Lead Discussants.
During the discussions in both sessions, delegates explored various innovations to strengthen the position of emerging development partners in global development. Efforts were also made to enhance cooperation by leveraging the strengths of each country. EDP meeting delegates expressed hope that EDP could become an annual platform that strengthens collaboration and partnerships among emerging donor countries, and enhances their contributions to achieving sustainable development goals on the global stage. The EDP meeting was organized in collaboration with the Indonesian Agency for International Development (LDKPI).
